Baa, Baa, Black Sheep – Traditional Children’s Song – Sheet Music for Easy Violin on G and D with Piano Accompaniment

The sheet music offered here is for “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep”, a traditional children’s song under Roud Folk Song Index #4439, arranged for easy violin with the lyrics attached. The melody is a variation of the French Ah! vous dirai-je, maman, an extremely popular melody that is also used for Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, the Alphabet song, and a Mozart exercise. Baa, Baa, Black Sheep was first printed in 1744, as far as we know, and some people claim it is about a tax which was in effect from the 12th to the 15th centuries in England.

This version is arranged for a violin solo in G major with a piano accompanying and strengthening with the melody. I noted some chords on the piano part so that the accompanist can make up whatever she or he so chooses. The piano part, containing the entire melody, can also function as a stand-alone. I threw the chords into the piano part even though a lead sheet technically should be only the melody + chords. For one thing, the piano right hand part -is- the melody. Also, I do not want to confuse young children with chords in their part. They tend to say such things as, “Oh, that’s a G because there is a G above it.” even though the “G” in this case is for “G chord” and not “the note G”.

The .pdf contains the violin + piano score, the violin-only score, and the piano-only score.

Lyrics:

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir,
Three bags full:
One for the master
And one for the dame,
One for the little boy
Who lives down the lane.
Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir,
Three bags full.
