Aloha ‘Oe, or Farewell to Thee by Queen Lili’oukalani – Arranged for Easy Violin

The sheet music offered here is for “Aloha ‘Oe”, or “Farewell to Thee”, by Queen Lili’oukalani. This arrangement is for easy violin in G major. The sheet music include the lyrics in both Hawaiian (Look: 4 vowels in a row!) and English.

Aloha ‘Oe is known as Queen Lili’oukalani’s most famous song. She composed it in 1878 in Hawaiian and did her own English translation, which is a fact that I immensely approve of.

The arrangement you see here is a simple song with a simple one-page sheet of music. This is, of course, because I only scored the famous chorus of the song. Easy violin pieces for little children should be short.

I transcribed this from my memory but did check the lyrics, because I am not fluent in Hawaiian.

Lyrics

I have no idea whether or not these English lyrics are Queen Lili’oukalani’s own translation, but it is the version I know.

Aloha ‘oe, aloha ‘oe, Farewell to thee, farewell to thee,
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo. Thou charming one who dwells among the bowers
One fond embrace, One fond embrace,
A ho’i a’e au Before I now depart,
Until we meet again Until we meet again
