Angels We Have Heard on High – Traditional – Sheet Music for Piano with Lyrics or Voice

The sheet music offered here is for “Angels We Have Heard on High”, a traditional Christmas carol, arranged for piano in G major with all the lyrics between the staves. The words, by James Chadwick, were arranged to “Gloria” by Edward Shippen Barnes. I transcribed it. It is supposed to be inspired by “Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes”, a French carol by Francois-Auguste Gevaert.

This is a very straightforward arrangement that I used to accompany a group of amateur singers. The lyrics were moved into the staff to make it easier for me to follow. Speaking of which, here are the actual 4 verses (taken out of the Wikipedia article):

Lyrics

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plain
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains

Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be?
Which inspire your heavenly songs?

Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

See Him in a manger laid,
Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
With us sing our Saviour’s birth.

Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
